American-born Jana Kirn and all-around radcat, took some time to sit down with us and give an insight into her ever-growing photography career, time in Australia, and many, many wild adventures. Never without a camera in hand alongside a vision like no other, she predominantly works for various fashion brands but is always keen to snap the amusing moments in everyday life. Refreshingly free with her outlook on, well, pretty much anything, you can’t help but be completely infatuated with her and all her little ways.
Discussing her work, she likes to keep all forms of regiment away so as not to spoil her natural process, “every time I shoot photos, I don’t like to think of it as “A SHOOT”... Rather, I just want it to be like a hangout. We’re just hanging out, having fun and creating pictures. I like to feel things out along the way and let moments happen. Sometimes the unexpected is what makes the best photographs.” Her easy-going energy certainly plays a huge part in the end result, with a rare ability to capture the magic of a moment yet in the most organic manner.
Inheriting the love for photography from her mom, Jana grew up surrounded by bona fide creativity that has shaped her focus and made her who she is today. “My mom studied art in college back in 76’ and was always shooting photos for school, then worked in graphic design from the late 70s to the early 90s. Before everything went digital, she was developing film and working in the darkroom for advertising projects and making large-scale silkscreens. I have a distinct memory of being, like, four years old (?) and going to work with her and walking into “the big dark red room”. I had no idea what went on in there, but I liked it.”
